Trends rarely move in a straight line. After a strong impulse, price usually pulls back before continuing. Fibonacci retracement levels (38.2%, 50%, 61.8%) mark common areas where pullbacks end. This strategy waits for a pullback into that zone and buys when a bullish candle confirms the trend is resuming.
How it works
- Identify a strong impulse move: a clear swing low to swing high.
- Draw Fibonacci retracement from the swing low to the swing high.
- The 38.2%–61.8% zone is the "buy zone" where pullbacks often end.
- Wait for a bullish confirmation candle in the zone. Levels alone are not signals.
- Stop below the 61.8% level (or the swing low for safety); target the prior high and beyond.
The rules
| Entry | Bullish candle closes inside the 38.2%–61.8% zone. |
|---|---|
| Stop loss | Below the 61.8% retracement. |
| Take profit | Prior swing high, then trail for the extension. |
| Filter | Only after a strong, clean impulse move. |
Pros
- Enters trends at a better price than chasing
- Clear structure for stops and targets
- Widely watched levels
Cons
- Drawing swing points is somewhat subjective
- Deep pullbacks can become reversals
- Levels are areas, not exact prices
Common mistakes
- Buying a level without confirmation
- Drawing Fibonacci on choppy, unclear swings
- Treating Fibonacci levels as magic rather than zones of interest
Lesson transcript
Lesson seven: trend pullbacks with Fibonacci. Strong trends rarely move in a straight line. They step forward, pause, pull back, and step forward again. We want to buy those pauses. Here's a powerful impulse. Price surges from a swing low near one hundred to a swing high near one hundred and thirty. Chasing it up here would be risky. Instead, we wait. We draw Fibonacci retracements from the low to the high. The key levels are thirty eight point two, fifty, and sixty one point eight percent. That zone is where healthy pullbacks often end. Price pulls back into the zone, right near the thirty eight point two level. But a level is not a signal. We wait for buyers to prove themselves with a strong bullish candle. There it is. We buy. The stop goes below the sixty one point eight percent level. If price falls through there, the pullback is too deep and the trend may be broken. Our first target is the prior high. And the trend resumes, blowing through the prior high. We bought at a discount, with a clear stop, inside a strong trend. That's the power of patience. The rules. Strong impulse first. Draw the Fibonacci. Buy a bullish candle in the thirty eight to sixty one percent zone. Stop below sixty one point eight. Target the prior high, then trail. Recap. Don't chase. Let the trend come back to you, and buy with confirmation. Next, we move to day trading with the opening range breakout.
